# Standard Task Box Overview

# Standard Task Box Overview

A Standard Task is the basic to-do in Nekst. You can add tasks while building a workflow, during transaction setup, or any time after a transaction is live.

## Add a single task

1. Click **+ Add Task** from the **Tasks** page or an individual **Transaction** page.
2. Choose the task **Type**.
3. If you're on the Tasks page, also select the **Transaction** the task belongs to. (On a Team Pro account, the transaction determines which team members can be assigned.)

## The task box has two versions

The fields change depending on where you're working:

* **Workflow (template) version** — tasks use *relative* dates: a number of days before or after the Start or End Date.
* **Live transaction version** — once a transaction is launched, tasks use an actual *calendar* date.

## Workflow version (building a template)

Top to bottom, the task box includes:

* **Task Name** (required) — the task's name. For Email tasks, this also becomes the subject line.
* **Key Date** — mark significant contract deadlines (inspection, loan commitment) or dates you need advance notice of (final walkthrough, closing). Key Dates get their own calendar view, the "Next Upcoming Key Date" column on the Transactions page, and the widget atop each transaction, where you can complete a deadline in one click. See [Key Dates](https://help.nekst.com/en-us/article/key-dates-track-and-complete-your-critical-deadlines-hbd7q8/).
* **Private** — only you and assignees see the task. Useful for Teams.
* **Business Days** — count only Monday–Friday.
* **Portal Roadmap** — display this task on the Client Portal Roadmap.
* **Due** + **Days** — set the timing: a number (**Due**) plus a reference (**Days**) — e.g., a number of days before or after the Start Date or End Date.
* **If weekend, shift to** — leave as *Don't shift*, or auto-move a weekend due date to the Friday before or the Monday after. (Note: Launching a new transaction on a weekend may show tasks as "past due" if they shift backwards to the prior Friday.)
* **Link to Detail Box** — connect a task that represents a contract date (e.g., End of Inspection Period) to its Detail Box. When the transaction launches, the task's due date auto-fills the Detail Box and any SmartTags that use it.
* **Group** — add the task to a [Task Group](https://help.nekst.com/en-us/article/how-to-use-task-groups-1ebhzb0/) so you can remove a batch of tasks in one click at launch.
* **Task Flag** — apply a colored [Task Flag](https://help.nekst.com/en-us/article/task-flags-mark-and-filter-individual-tasks-zpblu9/) (High Priority, On Hold, etc.) to mark and filter the task.
* **Task Description** — full instructions for your team, new admins, or the Client Portal Roadmap.
* **Transaction Parties** — assign the task and set reminders by role:
* **Assigned To** — the role responsible (Manager, Buyer, Seller, Buyer's Attorney, Lender, etc.). Anyone added with that role inherits the task automatically.
* **Remind In** — send that party a system reminder 0–3 days before the due date (around 9am in your local time). This system generated reminder email can't be edited.

## Live transaction version (after launch)

Adding a task to a live transaction uses the same box with a few differences:

* **Transaction** — when you add from the **Tasks** page, pick the transaction first. (Skipped when you add from inside a transaction.)
* **Task Name** (required).
* **Key Date · Private · Portal Roadmap** — the same checkboxes as the workflow version. *Business Days* and *If weekend, shift to* don't appear here, since the task already has a real calendar date.
* **Due** — an actual calendar date (MM/DD/YYYY) instead of a Before/After offset.
* **Link to Detail Box** — same as the workflow version.
* **Task Description**.
* **Transaction Parties** — **Assigned To** specific people (roles become individuals once a workflow is launched), each with their own **Reminder** option.

A few notes specific to live tasks:

* **Task Flags** are applied from the flag icon on the task row, not from this Add Task box. See [Task Flags](https://help.nekst.com/en-us/article/task-flags-mark-and-filter-individual-tasks-zpblu9/).
* **Comments** — every task row shows a comment bubble. **Gray** means no comments; **blue** means there are unread comments. Click the bubble to open the comments popover — read existing comments, add new ones from the inline Add Comment popup, and tag teammates with **@mentions**. All comments log to the Activity Tracking page.
* **Checklists** — a Standard Task can carry one or more named checklists of check-off sub-items. The task row shows a progress counter (for example, 3/4); click it to check items off without expanding the task. See [Task Checklists](https://help.nekst.com/en-us/article/task-checklists-track-sub-steps-inside-a-task-xe8oi2/).
* **Group** is a workflow-only setting.

## Good to know

* Workflow tasks can only use Before/After dates; calendar dates are available only after launch.
* Choose **No Due Date** to park a task in the "No Due Date" section and assign a date later.
* Editing a task inside a workflow does **not** update transactions you've already launched from it.
