# Key Dates: Track and Complete Your Critical Deadlines

Every transaction has a handful of dates that actually matter: inspection, financing, appraisal, closing. Key Dates are how you mark those tasks in Nekst so they rise above the rest of your task list.

Marking a task as a Key Date doesn't change what the task does. It changes where the task shows up: in the widget at the top of the transaction, in the Key Dates calendar, in the "Next Upcoming Key Date" column on the Transactions page, and in the calendar links you share with clients.

## Mark a task as a Key Date

Any Standard Task or Appointment Task can be a Key Date.

1. Open the task, either in a workflow or in a live transaction.
2. Check the **Key Date** box.
3. Save.

Do this in your workflow rather than in a single transaction and every future transaction inherits it. See [Standard Task Box Overview](https://help.nekst.com/en-us/article/standard-task-box-overview-1s98ko1/) for the rest of the fields.

To mark several tasks at once, use **Mass Update**. See [How to Use Task Groups](https://help.nekst.com/en-us/article/how-to-use-task-groups-1ebhzb0/).

## The Key Date widget

Open any transaction and the Key Date widget sits directly under the address, showing your Key Dates in order as a horizontal strip. The heading includes a running count, like **Key Dates (3 / 21)**, so you can see how far along the transaction is at a glance. If there are more Key Dates than fit on screen, use the arrows on either end to scroll through them.

### Complete a Key Date in one click

Each Key Date in the widget has a checkbox, the same one you use on any task row.

1. Click the checkbox next to the Key Date.
2. The Key Date turns green and shows **Completed:** with today's date.

That's the whole thing. You don't need to open the task or scroll down to the task list to close out a deadline.

To reopen a Key Date, click the checkbox again.

**Note:** One-click completion in the widget is available in the web app. It isn't in the Nekst mobile apps yet.

## Reviewing Key Dates when you launch

Key Dates get their own step during transaction setup, because they're the dates everything else schedules around.

When you launch a transaction from a contract, **Step 3 — Review Key Dates** is your first look at the contract deadlines. Every task linked to a contract date has already adjusted itself to match your contract, and a green Sparkle icon marks each one Nekst AI updated. If you verified your dates in Step 1, you usually won't need to change anything here.

The same step appears when you add another workflow to an existing transaction. See [Create Your First Transaction from a Contract](https://help.nekst.com/en-us/article/see-it-work-create-your-first-transaction-from-a-contract-18q84ti/) and [Adding More than One Workflow to a Transaction](https://help.nekst.com/en-us/article/adding-more-than-one-workflow-to-a-transaction-1whagqo/).

## Key Dates on your calendar

Key Dates have their own calendar feed, separate from your full task list.

**For you:** click **Calendar Links** in the header and copy the **Key Dates** link, then subscribe in Google Calendar, Apple Calendar, or Outlook. Most people sync this one instead of All Tasks, since it keeps a personal calendar readable. Full steps: [Syncing your Nekst Calendar](https://help.nekst.com/en-us/article/syncing-your-nekst-calendar-with-google-calendar-or-other-ical-supported-programs-15c817o/).

**For your clients:** every contact has a **Key Dates Link** on their profile covering all transactions they're part of. It updates on its own as dates shift and tasks get completed. See [Sharing Calendar Links with Your Clients](https://help.nekst.com/en-us/article/client-calendar-links-15fdqla/).

Calendar subscriptions refresh on their provider's schedule, not instantly. Treat Nekst as the source of truth.

## Filtering to just Key Dates

Use the **Show Key Dates Only** filter to strip everything else out of view.

* **On the Tasks page** — filter your whole task list down to Key Dates across every transaction. Good for a morning pass over what's actually at stake this week.
* **Inside a single transaction** — hide routine tasks and see only that deal's deadlines.
* **On the Workflow page** — while building or editing a workflow, confirm which tasks are marked as Key Dates.

Building a deadlines-only workflow: turn the filter on to confirm what's marked, then turn it off and use **Mass Update** to delete everything that isn't a Key Date. See [Building your First Workflow](https://help.nekst.com/en-us/article/building-your-first-workflow-rgdo0w/).

On the Tasks page you can save that filter as a preset and switch back to it in one click. See [Saved Filter Presets](https://help.nekst.com/en-us/article/saved-filter-presets-1l5hlk2/).

## Good to know

* Key Dates and the Client Portal Roadmap are separate settings. A task can be one, both, or neither. See [Roadmap Placement](https://help.nekst.com/en-us/article/roadmap-placement-for-standard-appointment-tasks-1jhj89s/).
* Email and SMS tasks can't be Key Dates.
* Editing a task inside a workflow does not update transactions you've already launched from it.
